R4 vs. R8 Flex Duct: The Crawlspace Condensation Problem

The R-number on flex duct is insulation between the air you conditioned and the space the duct runs through. In a sealed, conditioned space the difference between R4 and R8 is a utility-bill rounding error. In a vented crawlspace it's the difference between a dry duct and a wet one.
Summer air in a vented crawl arrives warm and loaded with moisture. Run 55-degree supply air through thin insulation and the jacket surface drops below the dew point — the duct sweats, insulation saturates, and the callback arrives as dripping, sagging runs or a moldy smell the homeowner can't place.
R8's thicker blanket keeps the outer jacket above dew point in conditions where R4 quietly fails. On a typical system the material difference is modest against the cost of a single condensation callback — which is why R8 is the sensible default spec for vented crawlspaces and unconditioned attics in humid climates.
Whatever the grade: pull it tight, support every four feet, and keep runs short. Compressed or snaking flex gives back everything the insulation bought.
