Western North Carolina compresses three climates into one service area. An Asheville valley floor at 2,100 feet sees a different winter than a ridge house at 4,500, and the right heating spec follows the elevation, not the ZIP code.

In the valleys — Asheville, Hendersonville, the river corridors — modern heat pumps carry the season efficiently. Design temperatures sit in the teens, cold snaps are short, and a properly sized heat pump with a matched electric heat kit covers the handful of nights that dip lower. Where natural gas isn't at the street, this is the default answer.

Above roughly 3,000 feet the math shifts. Standard heat pumps lose capacity as the mercury falls, and mountain cold snaps arrive exactly when the equipment has the least to give. Up here the honest options are cold-climate (hyper-heat class) equipment that holds output below zero, generously sized auxiliary heat, or gas.

Where gas is available — street gas in town, propane everywhere else — dual fuel deserves the quote: a heat pump doing the cheap work of spring and fall, handing off to the furnace at the balance point. Set the changeover honestly and the utility bills sell the system for you.

One spec note that costs nothing: on any mountain heat pump, set up auxiliary-heat lockout at the thermostat. Strip heat running unsupervised through a January cold snap is how a comfortable house produces a power bill nobody's proud of.
