The C-Wire Problem: Smart Thermostats on Old Wiring

The most common smart-thermostat surprise isn't the app — it's the wiring. Connected stats need continuous 24V power, which means a common (C) wire, and a lot of existing homes ran four-conductor cable decades ago without one.
Check before the sales conversation gets ahead of the wiring: pull the old stat, count conductors, and look for spares folded back in the wall. An unused conductor in the existing cable is the clean fix — land it on C at the board and the stat, done.
No spare? Options in order of preference: pull new 8-conductor cable if the run is accessible (the permanent fix, and pennies at rough-in prices); use an add-a-wire module that multiplexes two functions onto one conductor; or choose a stat whose power-stealing design is actually reliable on that equipment. Power stealing works until it doesn't — variable-speed boards and some zone panels dislike the trickle current, and the failure mode is intermittent weirdness nobody can reproduce.
On heat-pump systems, whatever stat goes in must handle the reversing valve (O/B) and — in mountain heat-pump country — intelligent auxiliary lockout. The app is the feature the customer sees; the aux logic is the feature the power bill sees.
