Heat Pump vs. Gas Furnace in the Mountains
In WNC valleys, a modern heat pump heats for less money than propane and competes with natural gas for most of the season — it's the default answer where gas isn't at the street. The mountain complication is capacity: heat pumps lose output as temperatures fall, exactly when the load rises.
Below roughly 3,000 feet, standard equipment with a right-sized heat kit covers the design days. Above it, the honest choices are cold-climate equipment that holds capacity below zero, or gas backup.
Dual fuel is the adult compromise: heat pump economics for the 90% of hours that are mild, furnace muscle past the balance point. Set the changeover honestly and it's the cheapest total-cost setup in the region.
Whatever wins: on any mountain heat pump, configure auxiliary lockout at the thermostat. Unsupervised strip heat in January is how customers come to hate an otherwise good system.
